About the Glenn Atkinson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Glenn, known to many of his friends as Benny, was a lifelong resident of Newtown and was a graduate of Newtown High School, Class of 1981.  Glenn was a self employed Stone Artisan and did the stone work for the Newtown Meeting House, Edmond Town Hall and other Newtown landmarks.

Glenn was captain of the Swim Team during his senior year, and he was well known for
continuing his swimming career while serving as coach of the Torpedoes swim team.  As a coach and mentor, Glenn was a positive influence in the lives of  hundreds of children throughout the years.  The team spirit, self confidence, and sheer joy for life that Glenn instilled in the many children he coached is a living tribute to Glenn long after they have moved on from the Torpedoes swim team.   The encouragement each of  the team members shared with one another was matched only by that of Glenn.  Glenn's contnributions as the swim coach of the Torpedos were remembered in the article Glenn Atkinson Remembered by Eliot Schickler (Schickler, Eliot. "Glenn Atkinson Remembered." NewtownPatch [Newtown, CT] 30 Oct 2010. 9 Feb 2011. <http://newtown.patch.com/articles/glenn-atkinson-remembered>)

Glenn is also well known for displaying an illuminated American flag along Interstate 84 in Newtown to honor the victims and families of 9-11.  Glenn's dedication is chronicaled in the blog  The Newtown Man who loved his family ... and his flag  by Brian Koonz (Koonz, Brian. "The Newtown Man who loved his family ... and his flag." The News-Times [Danbury, CT] 15 Jan 2011. 9 Feb 2011.  <http://blog.ctnews.com/takeonlife/2011/01/15/the-newtown-man-who-loved-his-family-and-his-flag/>)

Glenn's generosity and community spirit were a great example for all of us.  However, Glenn's greatest example was the sheer enjoyment he got from being around kids, whether it was his own, Abby, Emma, Maggie and Ellen, or everyone elses.
